The Football World Cup is well underway and depending where your from right at the moment, you’re happy, sad, indifferent and/or hopeful.
Whatever the case here are some random world cup facts:
1. The first World Cup championship was held in 1930. All matches were played in the Uruguayan capital, Montevideo
2. The first goal scored in the World Cup was scored by Frenchman Lucien Laurent in the 19th minute against Mexico on July 13, 1930
3. The red and yellow card system was not introduced until the 1970 World Cup. The first player to receive a red card was Chile’s Carlos Caszely in 1974 in a match against West Germany in the 67th minute
4. The highest attendance for World Cup match was in the 1950 final. The official attendance was 199,854 for the match between Brazil and Uruguay in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
5. Scotland holds the World Cup record for most consecutive first-round eliminations with eight
6. The trophy is 36cm tall and made of solid 18 carat gold, weighing 6.175 kg
7. Six of the 17 World Cup tournaments that have ever been held been won by the host country
8. Brazil have won the tournament 5 times, that’s 1 time more than Italy
