It has been a few days now since news broke of President Obama awarding of the Noble peace prize and probably a million blogs so far. So today I thought I may as well join the noise and share what I think.
First a quote by Fidel Castro, reported today in Time,
“We choose to see in the decision, more than a prize for the President of the U.S., a criticism of the genocide policy that not a few Presidents of that country have pursued.”
Obama is a man seen by many as a beacon of hope. A politician that is aspiring to achieve greatness, to add real value to humanity through his and his country’s actions. The burden placed on him is indeed great and he has been shoved into a system where he is constrained, an economic crisis has marred the entirety of his presidency which has further tied his hands. However, throughout the last 9 months he has remained resolute on the many ideals that got him into power in the first place.
Whether you agree or not that he is worthy of the noble peace prize by his actions thus far depends on your view point. However you can surely not argue that awarding one of the highest humanitarian accolades to a man who is uniquely positioned to make the fundamental and necessary changes to step towards peace will no doubt influence his presidency and future political stance.
Hope, Idealism, Leadership and Direction are but a few things our leaders should stand for and bring to the table. This award should not act as confirmation of what has already been achieved but as a reminder about the struggle that we all face in making our world a safer place. It should also act as a catalyst for change providing Obama with a greater opportunity to pursue the most noble of pursuits, Peace. To you Obama, good luck!
